Weedons School opened in 1871. The first school building was well-designed but poorly constructed and a second wooden school was built on the present site to replace it . In 1966 this was replaced with the brick building that remains today at a cost of $18,850. A third classroom was added in 1976. Due to rapid roll growth, three further classrooms, a library and a multi-purpose room have been added since 1996. A further multi-purpose area is in the process of being designed and will include resource areas, small teaching spaces and a music room.
The gate containing the school motto overhead was designed and purchased by one of our past senior classes. In recent years, staff and students have reviewed the motto and while the gate remains as a momento, todays motto “Respect the rest and be your best” reflects our current thinking and culture.
In 2001 our administration area was upgraded and a multi-purpose classroom added. We named this Te Wharenui (Big Meeting House). It is used for PE, dance & drama, assemblies, art activities and meetings. In the foreground is the lunch area. This is also where we have our “Family Fun Nights”.This building can be hired out for community groups or family events of children who attend the school.
Our long awaited library, situated in the background was opened in 2000 by children’s author Margaret Mahy. In the foreground is our Junior playground.
Our exciting new adventure playground was opened on 2nd September 2010. It was made possible by a true community fundraising effort and the generosity of a number of organisations and individuals.
Thanks to the support of parents who monitor the pool as required by law, the pool is used by the community after school and during the holidays. By purchasing a key families have unlimited access. Teachers use it during school time for lessons but these are limited due to weather conditions during school terms and size for the older students. To compensate this we transport our children to Kings Swim School for an intensive fortnight of lessons with qualified instructors at the end of each year.
